10 govt schools to get solar panels
Kozhikode: City corporation authorities have initiated the official process to install solar panels at all government schools that fall under it’s direct jurisdiction. The decision to take up installation of solar panels aims to bring down electricity bill and to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the schools during the school hours.
The proposal was initiated after government schools started getting hefty electricity bills following increase in power tariff.
It has already installed solar panels at Government Vocational Higher Secondary school for girls Nadakkavu and Eranhikkal Government LP School. Corporation has earmarked a sum of Rs 2 crore for the installation of solar panels in the schools in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 annual plan programmes.
According to the corporation officials, more than 50 government schools are there in the corporation limit
Corporation education and sports standing committee chairman M Radhakrishnan said that the civic body has selected ten schools to set up solar panels. “The official process to install the solar panels has already begun. The exorbitant bills and huge maintenance cost prompted us to switch over to solar power to save money” he said.
