In Short : A reported 14,274 million units (MU) of power have been generated from renewable energy sources in Jammu and Kashmir during the period of April to December 2023. This highlights the region’s commitment to harnessing renewable sources for electricity generation, contributing to sustainable energy practices and potentially reducing reliance on conventional power.

In Detail : JAMMU : The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir generated 14274 Million Units (MU) of power from the Renewable Energy (RE) sources in between April 2023 to December 2023.

“While the UT generated 14274 MU of the power from renewable energy sources in April-December 2023 period, it generated 14760.23 MU of the power in same period of the preceding year (April 2022-December 2022),” read the recently released Monthly Renewable Energy Generation Report of the Ministry of Power, Government of India.

The report said that the power was generated from the hydropower projects only both in 2022 and 2023 as no other renewable source of the energy was tapped in the UT.

In the month of December 2023, the report said, 454.28 MU of the power was generated from the small and large hydro projects operational in the UT against 481.83 MU of the power generated in December 2022.

Separately, it said 16.32 MU of the power was generated in Jammu and Kashmir from small hydro power projects in December 2023 against 15.99 MU of power generation from the same renewable sources of the energy in December 2022.

As far as generation of power in April 2023-December 2023 period from small hydropower projects is concerned, J&K generated 347.34 MU of the power in 2023. Against this, the UT generated 327.03 MU of the power in the same period of preceding year respectively.

From various large hydropower projects operational in the UT, 437.96 MU of the power was generated in the month of December last year against 465.84 MU of the power generated in December month of the year 2022.

In the six months’ period of April 2023-December 2023, 13926.66 MU of the power was generated in J&K from major hydropower projects against 14433.20 MU of the power generated in April 2022-December 2022 period.

“The UT didn’t generate any power from solar projects, biomass energy projects, bagasse power projects, wind power projects, Inter-State Gas System (ISGS) power plants, and the power projects operational, if any, under the Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPCU),” the report said.

Principal Secretary to the Government, Power Development Department (PDD), H Rajesh Prasad, didn’t answer the repeated calls of the Excelsior to answer as to why the UT Government failed in tapping the energy potential of the other renewable sources of the energy.
