In Short : An investment of 48,000 crore in renewable energy is expected to generate around 11,000 jobs. This underscores the positive impact of substantial investments in the renewable energy sector, not only in contributing to cleaner energy sources but also in fostering employment opportunities and supporting economic growth.

In Detail : Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh is embracing modern renewable energy, with private companies pledging Rs 47,981 crore investment in pump storage hydropower and solar power units. This investment is expected to generate 9,470 MW of power and create job opportunities for around 10,940 people.

Three firms – Torrent Power Limited, Greenko Group, and JSW Energy Limited – will be setting up pump storage hydropower units in Sonbhadra district.

Additionally, TP Renewable Microgrid (Tata Power Limited) will install microgrid solar power plants in villages across the state.

Earlier, the UP government approved eight pump storage hydropower (PSH) units, including six in Sonbhadra, two in Mirzapur, and one in Chandauli. These eight PSH units are expected to generate 13,250 MW of power.

Water for the Sonbhadra project will come from the Sone River, while the Mirzapur and Chandauli projects will utilise water from the Adwa and Musakhand dams, respectively. PSH stands out as a triple threat in the renewable energy game. Firstly, it’s surprisingly affordable, boasting low upfront and storage costs that make it an accessible option for wider adoption. Secondly, it earns its nickname “water battery” by being incredibly eco-friendly, with minimal impact on the surrounding environment. Lastly, this project utilises a closed-loop pump-storage system, ensuring that any potential environmental footprint is further minimised. In short, PSH offers a cost-effective, sustainable, and responsible solution for our energy needs.

Significantly, Greenko’s 3600 MW PSH plant in Sonbhadra promises to be a game-changer, impacting nearby villages positively. Besides, Torrent Power’s 1750 MW plant will also contribute to the region’s development through CSR activities.

Overall, this project represents a significant step towards renewable energy adoption in Uttar Pradesh, offering both environmental and economic benefits.
