NTPC envisages environment protection and management practices as one of its prime responsibilities and focuses its efforts to minimise the impact of its operation on surrounding environment and ecosystem

Clean energy

NTPC’s power stations are based on conventional and renewable resources like coal, gas, solar, wind and hydro to produce power. The company has planned to reduce installed capacity of conventional source of power to less than 70 per cent from the existing 85 per cent by way of increasing the share of renewable energy. This process is aimed towards controlling and mitigating the emissions of particulates, sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) from coal/gas fired power plants. NTPC is installing supercritical/ultra supercritical technology coal fired power plants with high efficiency to reduce coal consumption and the corresponding reduction in emissions as compared to the sub critical technology.

Improved air quality

All existing NTPC units are equipped with electro static precipitator (ESP) which capture particulate emission. The company has undertaken a massive renovation and modernisation program to upgrade these ESPs. Of the 50 old ESP units, 18 have already been renovated and fitted with modern technology. The company is also in the process to find the optimal solution and suitable de-NOx technology for high-ash Indian coal.

Water conservation

NTPC, in its drive to conserve water has made sure that most of the plants are provided with closed cycle condenser cooling water systems with higher cycle of concentration and rain water harvesting systems and so on. New technology equipment like air-cooled condensers are being used to save water consumption. Also, NTPC power stations are provided with advanced waste water treatment facilities.

Plantation drive

Till date, more than 33 million trees have been planted by NTPC. of these, 10 million trees were planted during 2016-17 under accelerated afforestation program and one million trees during 2017-18. NTPC will plant one million trees every year in the future.
