Madurai: The Madurai bench of the Madras high court has passed an interim order restraining an energy company from installing high-tension wire poles and windmills in Parakiramapandian kulam in Keelakottai village in Tuticorin district following a petition filed by a member of the farmers’ association.

The petitioner, S K Arumairaj stated that the area where the windmill is to be set up belongs to the public works department (PWD) and ponds and agricultural patta lands form the area. According to the petition, the entire agriculture of 16 villages situated in the region depends on the Parakiramapandian kulam or Indirakulam at Keelakottai village and the panchayat ponds at Govindapuram village.

“Many windmills were installed within the jurisdiction of Govindapuram village without following the guidelines of ministry of new and renewable wnergy,” the petition stated adding that the energy company has been installing windmills with capacity if 33,000 kw in their vlllage.

“Laying these high-tension wire platforms with massive concrete bed will destroy our village tank bed,” the petition said. It added that there are agricultural lands within 52m from the proposed site and five agricultural wells and four drinking water wells within 100m.

The petition also noted that it is necessary for the company to seek permission from the village panchayat as per the Tamil Nadu Panchayats Act and they are by-passing them and sought court intervention.
