Power wholesaler wants to gauge how, when electric vehicle owners charge

Electric vehicle drivers within Platte River Power Authority’s service area can help it plan for the future and save money on new car charging equipment by participating in a study.

Platte River Power — which is the member-owned power wholesaler for Longmont, Loveland, Fort Collins and Estes Park — is offering a $200 rebate to customers who purchase a smart electric vehicle charging station through the utility’s Efficiency Works Store online at efficiencyworksstore.com/collections/electric-vehicle-chargers and agree to share data on their devices’ usage with the utility.

The data from the chargers — which allow users to schedule charging around the most cost-effective times for energy demand— will be used by the utility to better understand energy consumption as it works to become a 100 percent non-carbon power producer by 2030, according to a news release.

The study is being conducted by Platte River in collaboration with eMotorWerks, developer of the JuiceNet platform-enabled charging stations that allow users to manage charging while providing data to the utility.

An additional $154 manufacturer’s rebate will be given to the first 100 people to buy the JuiceBox Pro 40 plug-in charging station.

In Platte River’s service area, 0.4 percent of registered vehicles are electric, which is nearly twice the rate for the rest of the state, according to a Fort Collins-led study, the release stated. The utility is expecting 300 participants for the study.

Customers wanting the rebate must enter their address and utility account number on the Efficiency Works Store website.
