The company also claims that the battery will be cheaper than the present battery as it has replaced high-cost material with a non-flammable inorganic electrolyte.

NEW DELHI: Innolith AG, a German technology startup claims to have built a high-density battery with a range of 621 miles (1000 km) which can help break the short range problem of electric cars, reports an American technology news website.

However, the company may take four to five years to be able to commercialize the battery.

According to the company, the newly developed battery will squeeze 1kWh of energy into a single kilogram of battery mass this would result in a long-range battery with reduced weight.

To put things into perspective, the 64kWH lithium-ion battery used in Kia e-Niro can go up to 282 miles (454 km) of range with the weight of 475 kg, which means energy density of 0.14 kWh per kilogram.

Moreover, Innolith also claims that the battery will be cheaper than the present battery as it has replaced high-cost material with a non-flammable inorganic electrolyte. The only thing that will remain common between the conventional battery and Innolith battery is that both will take the same time of overnight plugin charge.

In a media report, Alan Greenshields, Chairman, Innolith said “We take the organic materials out and replace them with inorganic or basically salt-like materials, and that does two things for you.”

He also added, “One is it gets rid of your fire risk, so, of course, there’s nothing to burn. And the second part is you’ve also got rid of the most reactive components in the system, which makes it easier to build a battery where you can pack in a lot of energy without the thing becoming unstable.”

In the first phase of launch, the battery will first be tested in a pilot scheme in German. It will also have the option to license the battery to other manufacturers.
