Hyundai is all set to launch Kona electric SUV in India on July 9. With the introduction of Hyundai Kona, the South Korean carmaker will foray into the Indian electric vehicle space.

Hyundai Kona boasts of an impressive design with a closed-off front grille and twin headlight design. There are LED headlamps, LED DRLs and LED rear lamps. The electric SUV gets 17-inch alloy wheels as well. Features like 7-inch digital cluster, 8-inch touch screen, paddle shifter (regenerative braking control) and electronic gear shift button are available inside the cabin of Kona.

The international-spec Hyundai Kona comes in two battery options — 39.2 kWh and 64.0 kWh. The electric SUV gets a permanent-magnet synchronous motor. The power and torque output in standard trim is 136 hp and 395 Nm, respectively. It has a top speed of 155 kmph, while the driving range is 312 km in a single charge. The upper trim makes 204 hp and 395 Nm of torque. It has a maximum speed of 167 kmph and can cover a distance of 482 km in a single charge.

According to Hyundai, Kona’s lithium-ion batteries are liquid-cooled to ensure optimal performance and efficiency. They can be recharged up to 80 per cent of the capacity in less than an hour with 100 kW DC fast charging station for minimal downtime.

At the moment, we are not sure which Hyundai Kona variant will be launched in India. We will have to wait and see if the country gets 39.2 kWh trim or the 64.0 kWh version or both of them. Expectations are that the electric SUV might be priced in India around Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom).

Hyundai Motors India has reported a 3.2 per cent fall in cumulative sales to 58,807 units in June 2019. The company recently launched Venue compact SUV in the country for a starting price of Rs 6.50 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
