A CAG report has pointed out that Maharashtra has a huge potential for the development of solar energy, given that it gets 250 to 300 days of clear sun. However, despite the potential of 64,320MW assessed by the ministry of new and renewable energy, the state government had not declared any policy for the development of solar energy till June 2015. In the absence of a policy, a nominal target of 275MW was fixed by the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency.
MEDA said that in the absence of a solar policy for the period 2007-15, the target of 275MW was fixed on the basis of interest taken by private investors and projects in the state under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission.
