Premier Solar to set up 200 MW module unit
Premier Solar Limited, one of the country’s oldest solar PV installation solutions providers, is set to expand its solar PV module manufacturing capacity by setting up additional capacity of 200 MW by the year-end. The Hyderabad-based company, which is ranked among the top EPC players in the country, currently has an installed capacity of 100 MW for module manufacture and 50 MW for solar cell manufacture, at Dundigal, near Hyderabad.
“We are in the process of expanding out solar module capacity from the present 100 MW by setting up a 200 MW capacity module unit. The orders for equipment have been placed and we expect to commission the unit by December 2016,” said Surender Pal Singh, Chairman, Premier Solar. In an interaction with BusinessLine, Singh said: “The company has achieved more than 100 MW of solar EPC installations, which includes 46 MW in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. We have a strong EPC pipeline and are also looking to further consolidate our module and cell business with capacity addition.”
“Though there are some concerns about domestic manufacturers being less competitive given the duty structure, which favours cheaper imports, we expect this anomaly to be addressed by the Centre soon. In addition, a number of new projects may mandate domestic content. This will provide a big boost to the sector,” he said. The company has also been exporting its modules to some of the neighbouring countries and expects to further step up exports.
Commenting on the rooftop solar segment in the country, Singh said: “This is just the beginning for the rooftop solar business. It will get a lot bigger as more people and companies see value in solar rooftop installations. With the price of power steadily going up, people will see value in rooftop solar power installations.”
