Electric co-ops create new electric vehicle charging network
Three new electric vehicle fast-charging stations are now open to the public at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center in Kahului, Pi’ilani Village Shopping Center in Kihei and the Lahaina Aquatic Center.
Owned and operated by Hawaiian Electric, the publicly accessible stations with DC fast chargers offer a lower rate during daytime hours to encourage charging when solar energy is typically abundant, according to a news release.
The electric vehicle charging rate on Maui is 28 cents per kilowatt-hour between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., 40 cents per kWh between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. and 38 cents per kWh between 10 p.m. and 9 a.m.
The company brought another fast-charging station online in August with the EV-Maui rate at the Pukalani Terrace Center.
The four completed sites were selected to cover a broad driving range around the island. They previously accommodated aging charging infrastructure for the members-only EVohana program that was retired in July, the news release said.
