The hotel is powered by a host of clean tech like wind turbines and electric boilers
ITC Windsor in Bengaluru is showing that travel and sustainability can go hand-in-hand. The hotel has become the first hotel in the world to receive the LEED Zero Carbon Certification, a recognition of its energy-efficient operations. The certification is given by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC)—a non-profit organisation that promotes sustainable building and construction.
What is the LEED certification?
LEED Zero Carbon recognises buildings operating with net zero carbon emissions from energy consumptions. ITC Hotels has had a longstanding focus on sustainability—with “Responsible Luxury” as its brand promise. It was one of the first hotel chains to eliminate the use of single-use plastic products and serve farm-to-fork low carbon footprint cuisines. The group has the largest number of LEED Platinum Certified properties in its fold. Nakul Anand, Executive Director of ITC said: “Elevating the role of buildings in mitigating climate-related risks and halting resource depletion is critical in achieving a sustainable and regenerative future for all. At ITC Hotels, we understand the value of going beyond efficiency and have showcased extraordinary sustainability leadership by enhancing the renewable energy footprint, energy efficiency and mitigation of greenhouse gases emission.”
ITC Windsor stands out in particular for its commitment to sustainability. The hotel is powered by its own wind turbine generators and uses energy-efficient technologies like electric boilers, induction burners and other renewable sources of energy. “Given the climate-related risks we are facing and the central role buildings play in climate mitigation, ITC Windsor’s LEED Zero certification for carbon demonstrates visionary leadership because it contributes toward a regenerative future and represents a commitment to making the world a better place,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO, USGBC.
So the next time you book yourself a stay at ITC Windsor, you can be rest assured that you’re making a sustainable choice.
