AC Energy and UPC Renewables Start Building Wind Farm in Philippines
AC Energy and UPC Renewables begin construction works on the Balaoi and Caunayan wind farm in the Philippines.
Philippines-based energy company AC Energy and its partner, UPC Renewables, have started construction works on the Balaoi and Caunayan wind farm.Built with a PHP11.4bn ($238m) investment, the 160MW wind farm is located in Pagudpud in the Philippines’ Ilocos Norte region.
AC Energy chief development officer Jose Maria Zabaleta said: “We are very excited to begin the construction of the Balaoi and Caunayan wind farm, which will be the largest and lowest-cost renewable energy producer in the country.
“This project will further augment our generating capacity, following our recently completed solar farms and battery storage plants, and will contribute to the growth of our renewables share as we scale up our sustainable investments.”
Siemens Gamesa will supply, install and commission a total of 32 SG 132 and SG 145 turbines for the project, each with a 5MW capacity.
AC Energy aims to complete the project in the fourth quarter of next year and for it to come online by 2023.
Once completed, the project will help the company to double its wind energy capacity in the Philippines.
Balaoi and Caunayan will be the third project developed by AC Energy in Ilocos Norte, after the NorthWind project in Bangui and the North Luzon Renewables project in Pagudpud.
UPC Renewables Philippines CEO David Sutton said: “The site of the Balaoi and Caunayan wind farm has one of the best wind resources in the country. Its construction marks the culmination of over ten years of development work.
“We are grateful for the continuing support of the Ilocos Norte provincial government and the municipality of Pagudpud in helping to bring this project to fruition.”
In 2018, AC Energy signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and financing document for the development of new solar plants in Vietnam.
The signing marked the company’s second renewable energy platform in Vietnam, in partnership with AMI Renewables Energy Joint Stock.
