Svenska kraftnät has applied to the government for approval of an investment package of SEK 8.4 billion. The money will go to meet the large power needs that are expected to arise along the upper Norrland coast.

The new industrialization in Norrland with a focus on fossil-free production of steel, among other things, significantly increases electricity use. In parallel, renewable electricity production is expected to be greatly expanded. In Svenska kraftnät’s forecast for the area on the northern Norrland coast, the desired connections amount to 5,000 MW for new outlets and 4,000 MW for connections for renewable electricity production.

– These desired input and output increases create a great need for network reinforcements, says Peter Wigert, CFO, Svenska kraftnät.

The package of measures – called the Norrland coast – for which Svenska kraftnät is seeking approval from the government has been designed as a pilot project. The purpose is to shorten lead times in the investment processes in order to more quickly meet the large power needs that are expected to arise along the upper Norrland coast. Normally, the lead time from identifying a need to putting a new power line into operation is about 12-15 years. To meet the demand for grid capacity, Svenska kraftnät has the ambition to halve the lead time.

The package includes that Svenska kraftnät builds three new system-strengthening 400 kV lines: Letsi – Svartbyn, Högnäs – Stornorrfors and a reinforcement or reinvestment of Svartbyn – Keminmaa. In addition, three 400 kV stations are also included: the station Högnäs 2, Hertsön and Svartbyn 2, as well as 400 kV connection lines between Svartbyn and Hertsön and between Högnäs and Högnäs 2.
