  • Arene has announced Total Eren as the winner of a competitive auction round for Dondo Solar Project

  • The plant will be located in Dondo district of Sofala province, near the city of Beira

  • National utility EDM will procure power generated by the 40 MW DC/30 MW AC solar power plant

  • French renewable energy company Total Eren has emerged as the winner of a 40 MW DC/30 MW AC Dondo Solar Power Plant in Mozambique after the country’s Energy Regulatory Authority (Arene) announced its selection in the competitive auction.

The project will be set up in Dondo district of Sofala province near the city of Beira. Power generated will be contracted to be supplied to national utility Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM).

A subsidiary of TotalEnergies, Total Eren beat Globeleq Africa Holding Limited to win the project with its technical and economic proposals. According to Afrik21, Globeleq and EDF Renouvelables offered a joint front. Other contenders for the job were Norway’s Scatec and Italy’s Enel Green Power (EGP). Globeleq is building the country’s 1st grid-scale battery energy storage system for 19 MW solar capacity for which it secured financing in December 2021

Arene also said it plans to launch 2 more solar project tenders, one for Lichinga and the other for Manje town in H2/2022, along with one for wind power project in Jangamo in H1/2023.

These projects are part of the government’s plans to realize around 120 MW of solar PV and wind energy capacity through independent power producers (IPP) under the Program for the Promotion of Renewable Energy Auctions (PROLER) program, for which it has received funds from the French Development Agency AFD.
