Croatia Receives EOI For 216 Renewable Energy Projects, Including For 950 MW Solar Facility – EQ Mag Pro

A local Croatian company called El Sun Energy has proposed to develop a 950.9 MW solar power plant in Croatia and is seeking approval from the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.
El Sun Energy’s proposal is part of 216 projects submitted by various companies for a total renewable energy capacity of 5.953 GW to the ministry in response to the latter’s public tender inviting expression of interest (EOI).
According to local news portal Šibenski, El Sun Energy has zeroed in on Promina municipality to build the 950 MW project on land that can’t be used for any other purpose. The company has also proposed to develop 2 more projects, one with 120 MW and the other with 9.99 MW capacity.
The ministry said it will evaluate the offers received and release a public tender for the issuance of energy approval. The list of proposed projects, leaning heavily towards solar energy, is available on the ministry’s website in Croatian language.
If approved, it will beat 500 MW DC Núñez de Balboa Solar Power Project of Iberdrola in Spain that currently is the largest solar PV plant in all of Europe. There is another larger installation planned by Engie and Neoen with 1 GW subsidy free solar and 40 MW energy storage capacity and a 10 MW electrolyzer for France.
In March 2022, Croatian energy market operator, Hrvatski Operator Tržišta Energije (HROTE) launched a 622 MW renewable energy auction comprising 300 MW of solar energy capacity.
Meanwhile, the ministry announced the commissioning of a 500 kW solar power plant for self-consumption by furniture manufacturer Sobočan doo in Murski Središće. The project is financed by the ministry itself to encourage renewable energy use in manufacturing industries under its Recovery and Resilience Plan.
