Oman develops USD 900m of solar, and wind projects – EQ Mag Pro

Oman is working on the development of solar and wind projects across the sultanate which will require investments totalling USD 900 million (EUR 850.8m).

Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) is currently developing two solar projects with a combined capacity of 1 GW in Ad-Dakhiliyah Governorate, chief executive Yaqoob bin Saif Al Kiyumi told Oman News Agency. The two sites will require investments of USD 600 million by the private sector. Al Kiyumi expects the two projects to be awarded by the end of this year.

Further USD 300 million will be invested in wind projects in Ash Sharqiyah South Governorate and in Wilayat Duqm in the Al-Wusta Governorate. The process of choosing investors for these initiatives will begin by the end of this year, Al Kiyumi noted.

These projects will support the Oman 2040 Vision which sets priorities in the areas of environment protection, reduction of carbon emissions, development of governorates and natural resources investment.

OPWP, which is the single buyer of power for all independent power producers in Oman, is planning to connect about 2.66 GW of new solar and wind projects to the grid by 2027 in order to cover increasing power consumption in the sultanate. The plan was unveiled in the company’s 7-Year Statement for the 2021-2027 period.
