14 companies, received the climate action recognition at the third edition of Climate Action Awards (CAP 2.0°)
NEW DELHI : Shri Avinash Mishra, Adviser, Natural Resources & Climate Change, NITI Aayog recognizing the winners of the third edition of Climate Action awards (CAP 2.0°), expressed that India is one of the most vulnerable countries in terms of climate resilience and by 2050 India will face water shortage in parts of the country because of the sever water stress. Mr. Mishra stated that the government and industry must collaborate to establish the concept of shared value, which can go beyond the horizons of long-term profitability and become synonymous with climate change mitigation, energy conservation, social inclusion, ethical conduct, and environmental care. The time has come to ensure the shared progress and well-being of people and the planet. It is about striking a balance between economic expansion, social development, and environmental protection.
He further stated that “We can move towards a sustainable future by transitioning technologically in areas like Carbon Capture Utilisation & Storage (CCUS), Green Hydrogen, Renewable Energy, usage of alternative fuels etc. To ensure the collective growth of the country and environment we should ensure the collaborative efforts from industries and the government as certain initiatives like Green Hydrogen Mission, FAME, ISA, Ethanol Blending etc., are there to support.”
The Climate Action Programme (CAP) 2.0°, a recognition programme to recognize business actions in combating climate change, was introduced by CII in 2018 in partnership with DSM. This aims to acknowledge credible action taken across all sectors to adapt to or mitigate climate change.
Ms. Seema Arora, Deputy Director General, Confederation of Indian Industry, said “Climate change also poses significant business risks. These include not only direct physical risks to business locations and activities from the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme climatic events, but also risks emerging from the transition of the global economy to low-carbon pathways, which include changes in technology, markets, regulatory frameworks, and stakeholder expectations. The flipside of a risk is an opportunity, and businesses taking early action on climate change can convert these risks into significant opportunities for value creation”.
Mr B Rajagopal, President DSM, congratulating the winners said that it has been an honour to partner with CII on the Climate Action Programme and Awards. He also said, “It is seen that climate awareness has not yet managed to reach smaller sector. Raising their level of awareness on climate change mitigation & adaptation measures continues to be a priority for India and we are playing our part by not just creating awareness but also hand holding them. However, this is an ongoing process and requires continuous engagement”
In the third edition of CAP 2.0, 21 large companies participated. The applicants underwent a rigorous evaluation process that included on-site assessment by a peer team of CII-certified assessors who spent approximately 700 man-hours per application over a period of six months. The final shortlist of applicants was validated by a pre-eminent jury comprising of leaders from government, civil society, and academia.
