Greece’s maiden battery storage tender delayed – report – EQ Mag
The launch of Greece’s first tender for battery energy storage capacity has been pushed back to the second quarter and is expected to take place in late June, Energypress reports.
The competition will be the first of two rounds through which the state will seek to allocate some EUR 200 million (USD 219m) in funding from Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Facility. The ultimate goal is to award around 900 MW to standalone battery storage schemes via two solicitations of 450 MW each.
According to the report, the Energy Ministry is working to complete all details related to the initial tender by the middle of April, with the technical specifications expected to include a capacity limit of 100 MW for individual proposals. Sources have said that batteries providing two and four hours of storage and linked to renewable power plants will be given priority.
Supposedly, the second auction is planned to be held a few months after the initial round.
Last autumn, Greece secures the European Commission’s (EC’s) nod to spend EUR 341 million on the construction and operation of up to 900 MW of grid-connected energy storage systems. It was then announced that developers would be awarded contracts by the end of 2023 and would be required to bring the proposed facilities online by end-2025.
