New York and six more states are seeking to secure USD 1.25 billion (EUR 1.15bn) of federal funding for their proposed Northeast Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub.
The proposal, representing a total value of USD 3.62 billion, has been submitted to the US Department of Energy, it was announced on Friday. It is competing for a slice of USD 8 billion included in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act for the establishment of clean hydrogen hubs across the US. As part of this, DoE last year launched a USD-7-billion funding opportunity, with April 7, 2023, set as a deadline for full applications.
Plans for the Northeast Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (NE Hub) were launched in March 2022. The initiative now includes the states of New York, New Jersey, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Vermont, as well as more than 100 hydrogen ecosystem partners.
The consortium said its proposal includes more than a dozen projects across the seven Northeast states that advance clean electrolytic hydrogen production, consumption and infrastructure projects. The hydrogen use is focused on hard-to-electrify sectors of the economy.
Details of the projects will not be disclosed while the application is being reviewed. DoE is expected to announce the successful regional clean hydrogen hubs in the autumn.
If successful, the NE Hub will develop its projects over four phases in the course of 10 to 12 years.
