In Short : In the period from April to December, electricity demand surged by 8%, reaching a total of 1,221.15 billion units. This significant increase reflects a notable uptick in power consumption during this timeframe, indicative of growing energy needs and economic activities.

In Detail : In September this financial year, electricity demand was at a record high of 243.27 GW.

Power Consumption: Electricity consumption in the country has increased by about eight percent to 1,221.15 billion units (BU) in the first nine months of the current financial year (April-December). This is a sign of boom in economic activities. The demand for electricity in the country in April-December, 2022-23 was 1,132.11 billion units.

Increase in electricity consumption is a sign of increase in economic activities.

Industry experts said that the eight percent increase in electricity consumption in the first nine months of the current financial year is a sign of increase in economic activities. Electricity consumption for the entire financial year 2022-23 was 1,504.26 billion units, which was 1,374.02 billion units in 2021-22.

Electricity demand at record level in September

The power ministry had estimated that the country’s electricity demand would reach 229 GW during summer in 2023. Due to unseasonal rains the demand in April-July did not reach the expected level. However, peak demand touched a new high of 224.1 GW in June before falling to 209.03 GW in July, 2023. Maximum demand reached 238.82 GW in August. It was at a record high of 243.27 GW in September this financial year.

Electricity demand will reach 400 GW by 2030

The maximum demand was 222.16 GW in October, 204.77 GW in November and 213.62 GW in December, 2023. According to experts, due to excessive rainfall this year, electricity consumption was affected in March, April, May and June. In a conference this month, Union Power Minister RK Singh had said that the maximum electricity demand in the country will reach 400 GW by 2030.
