Bangladesh To Import 1,000 MW Of Renewable Power From India – EQ
In Short : Bangladesh plans to import 1,000 MW of renewable power from India. This initiative aims to bolster Bangladesh’s energy supply, reduce carbon emissions, and strengthen cross-border energy cooperation for a sustainable and resilient power grid.
In Detail : Bangladesh signs MoU with India to import 1,000MW of renewable power to achieve its target of meeting 10 percent of its electricity demand from renewables by 2025
The Bangladesh government has signed an MoU with India to import 1,000 megawatts of renewable electricity. It has plans to tap Nepal and Bhutan, too, for its energy needs. If the country wants renewables to meet 10 per cent of all the electricity it needs by 2025, then it will need 2600 MW of green energy by then, which is up from 450MW now.
Bangladesh currently imports electricity generated from gas and fuel oil on a government-to-government basis. It also imports electricity from Adani Power’s coal-based plant.
Power minister Nasrul Hamid said that the primary reason for the high f electricity, gas, and fuel oil prices in Bangladesh is the strong dollar. The other reason is the government’s plan to phase out subsidies.
For Bangladesh to achieve its stated goal of catering to 10 per cent of its electricity demand from renewable sources by 2025, it would need to ramp up the production capacity of green energy to 2,600 dramatically. Currently, Bangladesh has 450 megawatts.
To achieve our energy generation goals, 2,500MW of electricity from renewable energy sources has been planned, with an additional 6,000MW in the pipeline as private sector investments. Efforts with the World Bank aim to promote private investment in renewable energy. Plans are in place to incorporate wind power alongside solar panels and explore offshore wind power generation. Additionally, there are initiatives to upgrade the transmission system to a smart grid and develop electricity storage capabilities.
The uninterrupted gas supply is expected to resume on July 15, and the normal electricity supply is set to be restored within three to four days due to the operation of the Payra power plant.
Petrobangla has announced international tenders for oil and gas exploration in the Bay of Bengal. The deadline for tender submission will be extended due to high interest from companies.
