To efficiently process seawater, NTPC initiative has implemented an innovative low-carbon desalination plant that utilizes waste heat from the thermal power plant’s flue gas.
This technology enables the cost-effective conversion of seawater into hydrogen-grade water, a crucial step in hydrogen production.
Water Efficiency in Hydrogen Production
Producing one kilogram of hydrogen typically requires 12-13 kilogram of purified water.
However, considering the growing water scarcity in India, the government is prioritizing the development of technologies that allow hydrogen production from alternative low-grade water sources, such as seawater and wastewater.
