BHEL-Hitachi Energy Consortium secures Khavda-Nagpur HVDC project – EQ

In Detail : A consortium of Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) and Hitachi Energy India has secured a contract from the Power Grid Corporation of India for the Khavda-Nagpur High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission project. This landmark project has been awarded on behalf of Power Grid’s special purpose vehicle (SPV) company.
The project involves designing and constructing 800kV, 6,000 MW HVDC terminal stations at the Khavda Pooling Station-2 (KPS2) in Gujarat and Nagpur in Maharashtra. Spanning 1,200 km, the system is designed for bi-directional power flow, efficiently evacuating renewable energy from Gujarat’s Khavda Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) to Nagpur. The completion is targeted for 2029.
This initiative is a critical component of India’s interstate transmission system (ISTS), developed to support the evacuation of eight GW of renewable energy as part of Khavda Phase V: Part A is the first HVDC project tendered under a tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) process.
The project underscores the strategic collaboration between BHEL and Hitachi Energy India in leveraging advanced HVDC technology to enhance renewable power integration into India’s grid.
