7,675 have got solar-powered green houses in five years
A total of 7,675 beneficiaries, including 76 weavers have been provided with solar powered green houses in the district during the last five years under the Tamil Nadu Village Habitations Improvement Scheme (THAI), the State government’s flagship programme to provide minimum basic facilities to the rural poor people. The Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj had built the houses at a total cost of Rs. 26.51 crore for the benefit of below poverty line (BPL) people in all the 11 panchayat unions since 2011-12, Collector S. Natarajan said. The beneficiaries included 7,599 BPL people and 76 handloom weavers, he said. Green houses were made available to the weavers during 2013-14 and 2014-15, he said adding that the 76 houses were built at a total cost of Rs. 2.03 crore after the unit cost of the green house was hiked from Rs. 1.80 lakh to Rs. 2.10 lakh during 2013-14. A maximum number of 1,626 beneficiaries, including 21 weavers benefited during 2014-15, he also added.
