As part of its move to tap renewable energy sources, the State government would consider how best to utilize huge quantity of garbage into energy to supplement the power requirements in the State.

Replying to a supplementary question in the Assembly on Monday, Power Minister Jagadeeshwar Reddy said with the support and coordination of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, the scope of producing power from tons of garbage that was available.

Replying to the main question, the minister said as of now Telangana State was producing 2792 MW of solar energy, which was highest in the country. He pointed out that keeping in view the pollution resulting from thermal power production, many countries the world over have been going for renewable sources of energy like solar energy, wind energy and so on. Even in India, this excise was being taken up in various States. Thus after the formation of Telangana State, the State government has gone in a big way for solar energy, he explained.

The minister further said the State government was panning to go in for energy wherever possible and like wise consider the feasibility of generating energy from garbage. As regarding the rate being charged for solar energy, he said it was being done on open bid system and the Central government was not concerned in this aspect. The supply was being done privately and GENCO was involved in this, he explained. (NSS)
