PORT BLAIR: The Electricity Department of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is hoping to completely eradicate power cuts at least from South Andaman region.
The Electricity Department recently became target of criticism from all sections of Andaman and Nicobar Islands after the department failed to find solution for 5 to 8 MW of power shortage in South Andaman region, which triggered large-scale power cut for a long time.
Now, a 5 MW Power Plant has been commissioned with effect from April 1 to bridge the gap of 6.5 MW delivered by the power plant of Suryachakra Power Corporation Limited before its closure on the 1st of this month.
The 5 MW power plant commissioned on April 1 and the 10 MW power plant in pipeline is the result of the meeting held on January this year on the request of the Lt. Governor, wherein the Minister of State for Power, New & Renewable Energy directed NTPC to establish 15 MW power plant in South Andaman.
“The Lt. Governor had directed the officials of NTPC last month to make all possible efforts for early commissioning of 5 MW power plant for which A&N Administration and Electricity Department will provide all required support. Though the date of commissioning of the 5 MW power plant was 8th April, 2018 as per agreement, which was programmed to be commissioned by 2nd / 3rd April, 2018, but was commissioned on 01.04.2018, only due to the sincere efforts made by the team of Electricity Department, NTPC and M/s Aggreko,” an official release from Andaman’s Electricity Department said here today.
According to electricity Department, still there is a marginal shortage of around 1 MW which can be managed without load shedding if all the consumers of Electricity Department cooperate and exercise energy conservation in the evening peak hours.
“The power shortage will be fully eradicated after the commissioning of 50% capacity of the 10 MW power plant by mid-May, 2018 being established through NTPC,” the release added.
