Another Benefit Of Electric Vehicles: 1 Crore New Jobs Will Be Created In India
India aims to meet 30 percent of its transportation needs with electric vehicles by 2030. The goal is attracting a lot of effort from the government and the EV industry alike. As the country makes this transaction from conventional fossil fuel vehicles to greener ones, another positive has come into focus. The associated jobs with the growth of a new industry.
In order to get this workforce ready in time, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship will oversee its creation in a “targeted and time-bound manner”. Essentially, the plan is to create a workforce specialising in various areas of EV manufacturing, including design and testing, battery manufacturing and management, sales, services and infrastructure.
As per Arindam Lahiri, CEO of the Automotive Skills Development Council, these standards could be put in place soon. “We have initiated the process of making EV-specific occupational standards in partnership with the Punebased Automotive Research Association of India,” he told ET. As per him, the draft for this ready and the standards could be formalised by as soon as June. Post this, the National Skill Development Corporation’s standards team will review these standards and approve them as deemed necessary.

Meanwhile, a curriculum for electric vehicle technicians is being developed by Kolkata-based Central Staff Training and Research Institute. In parallel, the Power Sector Skill Council is working on four occupational standards for supervisors, technicians and helpers who would be trained exclusively for e-vehicles, the report indicates.
The creation of new jobs is also being propelled by the Automotive Mission Plan 2026. The aim of the plan is to have India’s automotive Industry among the top three in the world, in engineering, manufacturing as well as exports of vehicles & components. The target is to grow it to over 12% of India’s GDP, creating a total of 65 million new jobs in the process.
