Motoring clubs expand EV charging commitment with acquisition of Chargefox network
UNDER the overarching control of Australian Motoring Services (AMS), a consortium of motoring clubs across Australia has acquired 100 per cent of Australia’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging network, Chargefox. They previously held a 40 per cent interest.
This new ownership is expected to accelerate the expansion of Chargefox’s EV charging network, toward its target of having more than 5000 EV plugs available at charging stations across the country and 2000 of those offering fast or ultra-rapid charging speeds.
Chargefox’s sale to AMS includes a stake owned by EV infrastructure provider Jet Charge, the CEO of which is Chargefox co-founder Tim Washington, who announced that Jet Charge had closed its $30 million Series B fundraising round with a cash injection from the sustainability-focused Kilara Growth Fund.
As Australia’s biggest and fastest-growing open charging network for modern EVs, Chargefox has managed more than 500,000 charging sessions for drivers via its smartphone apps and claims to have powered more than 14 million emissions-free kilometres of EV travel due to sourcing only renewable energy.
Established in 2002, AMS is wholly owned by the Mobility Clubs of Australia (NRMA, RACV, RACQ, RAA, RAC, and RACT) and also manages an extensive client base in the automotive, travel and retail sectors on behalf of the Mobility Clubs of Australia and car manufacturers (OEMs).
Chargefox will continue to operate as Australia’s largest EV charging network after the acquisition, with the broadened support of the AMS. The accelerated rollout of the network has broad-reaching benefits as it will facilitate further local and long-distance EV travel.
Further expansion of the charging network will likely be driven by external forces such as escalating petrol and diesel prices..
The acquisition by AMS promises to benefit current Chargefox users and commercial customers, including car rental and fleet companies, as well as the multiple partnerships with car manufacturers that enable Australians to purchase an EV with complimentary access to the Chargefox network.
AMS is the largest Australian wholesale roadside assistance and data management service provider in the motoring services market predominantly focused on business-to-business automotive, data warehousing and data analytics.
Its client base ranges from vehicle manufacturers to fleet, lease and hire car companies, as well as some of Australia’s major retail, travel and tourism businesses.
