Austria will open a tender with a December 13 deadline seeking to allocate 700 MW of solar, 190 MW of wind and 7.5 MW of biomass capacity.

The price of electricity from solar energy in this round is set at EUR 0.0933 (USD 0.092) per kWh, while wind farm projects cannot exceed EUR 0.0822 per kWh.

The cap for new biomass-fired power plants is set at EUR 0.1822 per kWh, while for repowering existing facilities, the maximum price is EUR 0.1747 per kWh.

Bids can be submitted three weeks before the deadline starting from November 22, 2022. Bidders are allowed to submit multiple proposals for different systems.

Winners of the tenders are awarded a market premium designed to compensate for the difference between the costs of producing renewable electricity and the average market price for electricity. The subsidy, introduced on Wednesday, is a second policy aimed at supporting the expansion of renewables in Austria, along with an investment subsidy.

In the current climate of very high electricity prices, market premiums are unlikely to pay, but serve as a safety net when market prices fall again.
