Azelio, Biodico plan 120 MW of thermal energy storage in California
Sweden-based Azelio AB has signed a pact with US biorefineries operator Biodico Inc to collaborate on the development of a series of thermal energy storage projects in California totalling 120 MW through 2024.
Under the terms of a new memorandum of understanding (MoU), the two parties will work together on an initial project of 13 kW in Atascadero that will serve as a commercial demonstration and showcase for Biodico’s modular renewable biofuel production system. Azelio’s component will form part of an energy system that also includes solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power generating capacity.
This pilot project should be implemented in 2021 and will be followed by the addition of 15 MW in 2022, 35 MW in 2023 and 70 MW in 2024. The total planned capacity corresponds to about 9,000 units of Azelio’s system, the Swedish firm said in a statement.
The California Energy Commission has pre-accepted the commercial showcase project to apply for a full grant proposal by the end of 2019.
