Bboxx Launches New Solar Solutions in DRC
UK-based energy company Bboxx has launched its new bPower20 product aiming to power rural households and micro-businesses. The initial launch will take place in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Togo, Rwanda and Kenya, with a further roll out in other markets in 2021.
The product comes with a 20-watt solar panel and up to 51-watt-hours daily usage. It features new lithium battery technology, which boasts higher energy density, meaning it is able to store more energy, increasing service life up to six years.
“At Bboxx we have always been driven by our mission to end energy poverty globally. Using a decade of experience and learning, we have now developed an even more affordable, reliable, sustainable, and higher-performing product,” says Christopher Baker-Brian, managing director of Bboxx’s production division.
Bboxx’s solar home systems have allowed 87,000 people to have more economic activities, has impacted 337,000 children and has saved over 460,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide, according to the company’s statements.
Following last week’s inauguration of the Kinshasa Solar City Menkao plant by DRC President Felix Tshisekedi, this announcement further demonstrates DRC’s commitment to renewable energy development. While the country boasts half of Africa’s hydroelectric potential, and shows tremendous hydrocarbon potential, renewable energy is part of the government’s economic diversification plan to generate more revenue from the energy sector, lessen the dependence on mining and achieve universal access to power by 2030.
