They have installed a 74-kilowatt generating solar power setup with 234 solar panels which will now power the elevators, water pumps and other common areas of the eight buildings in the society and help it save nearly Rs 10 lakh per year. It took the management of Bhoomi Green Society at Kulupwadi in Borivali East two years to brainstorm and convince every member of the society to go solar. “We spent around Rs 47 lakhs including the cost of the solar panels as well as other small construction that was required. A residential society in Borivali, in a bid to reduce their carbon footprint and actively depend on renewable energy, has successfully installed one of the largest roof-top solar power setups in the western suburbs. “Quick subsidy from the MNRE is proving to be a major incentive for buildings looking to go solar,” said Samant.

A residential society in Borivali, in a bid to reduce their carbon footprint and actively depend on renewable energy, has successfully installed one of the largest roof-top solar power setups in the western suburbs.

It took the management of Bhoomi Green Society at Kulupwadi in Borivali East two years to brainstorm and convince every member of the society to go solar. They have installed a 74-kilowatt generating solar power setup with 234 solar panels which will now power the elevators, water pumps and other common areas of the eight buildings in the society and help it save nearly Rs 10 lakh per year. The setup, which has already been connected to the grid this month, was officially inaugurated on January 26.

“With the support of every member and Saur Engineering, who were the service provider, we managed to install the entire solar roof-top in just one month,” said Jayshree Mahajan, a resident. Mahajan added that the service provider not only helped in the project’s speedy completion but also helped in getting approximately Rs 13 lakh as subsidy from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). “We spent around Rs 47 lakhs including the cost of the solar panels as well as other small construction that was required. We will be able to recover the entire money spent within four years. With net metering this will be a win-win situation for us,” she said.

“We have been trying to incorporate several eco-friendly ideas in our complex. We also have a rainwater harvesting system. Soon we will also begin treating our wet waste through vermicomposting,” said Ajit Desai, the society’s secretary.

Anup Samant from Saur Engineering said that the demand for solar rooftops is seeing a gradual rise as more awareness is being created. “Quick subsidy from the MNRE is proving to be a major incentive for buildings looking to go solar,” said Samant.
