In Short : Borosil Renewables is set to expand its solar glass manufacturing capacity by 50%, aligning with the increasing demand for renewable energy solutions. This expansion will boost the company’s production capabilities, supporting the solar industry’s growth and contributing to the global transition towards sustainable energy. The move reinforces Borosil’s commitment to advancing clean energy technologies.
In Detail : Borosil Renewables Limited, India’s largest and oldest solar glass manufacturer, has reaffirmed its dedication to Atmanirbhar Bharat by announcing a 50% expansion in its solar glass production capacity, a crucial component in the manufacturing of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels. After receiving approval from the Company’s Board of Directors on December 18, 2024, the expansion plans, which were previously on hold, are now back on track.
This decision follows the Ministry of Finance’s notification on December 4, 2024, introducing a “Reference Price” for imports aimed at curbing cheap and dumped imports from China and Vietnam. With this expansion, Borosil’s manufacturing capacity will grow from 1,000 tons per day to 1,500 tons per day. The Reference Price for imports from China, pegged at US$ 673–677 (equating to INR 143 per mm/square meter at the Container Yard), sets a minimum threshold for import prices, ensuring fair competition.
The solar glass industry in India had faced a significant crisis due to the dumping of cheap solar glass from Chinese-owned companies, which caused a sharp decline in prices and overwhelming import volumes. With the institution of the Reference Price, Borosil Renewables is poised to return to more sustainable margins, aiding its expansion initiatives.
This growth in domestic solar glass production will strengthen the supply chain for local PV module manufacturers, ensuring a reliable source of this vital component. Additionally, the increase in local production will help conserve foreign exchange, utilize India’s abundant raw materials, skilled workforce, and technology, and generate crucial employment opportunities within the country.
Borosil Renewables Ltd. is a pioneering Indian manufacturer of solar glass, catering to the rapidly growing renewable energy sector. The company is the first in India to manufacture solar glass, playing a crucial role in the production of photovoltaic (PV) modules for solar energy applications.
With a focus on high-quality, durable, and efficient glass for solar panels, Borosil Renewables supports India’s push toward energy independence and sustainability. The company operates in a competitive landscape, advocating for fair pricing and policy support, including anti-dumping measures, to protect local industries from below-cost imports, especially from China. With a strong market presence, Borosil is committed to advancing India’s renewable energy goals by ensuring a reliable supply of solar glass for the growing domestic and international demand for solar energy solutions.
