Bosnia’s Serb Republic signs a concession deal for a 49.5 MW wind farm

The wind farm, which will comprise 15 turbines, should be built in the next three years. It is expected to cost about 130 million Bosnian marka ($75.3 million).

Sarajevo: Bosnia’s autonomous Serb Republic signed a concession deal with the Vjetroelektrana Grebak on Monday to build and operate a 49.5 megawatt (MW) wind farm to help Bosnia diversify its energy supply, the energy ministry said.

In January, the region’s government granted a 50-year concession to VE Grebak to build the Grebak wind farm near the southeastern town of Nevesinje with a planned annual output of 130 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity.

The wind farm, which will comprise 15 turbines, should be built in the next three years. It is expected to cost about 130 million Bosnian marka ($75.3 million).

It will sell electricity on an open market, without a possibility to qualify for government subsidies, the ministry said in a statement.

Bosnia, which generates 60 percent of its electricity from coal-fired power plants and the remainder from hydro power, is seeking to diversify its energy supply and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

With only one 50.5 MW wind farm operational in the Balkan country, several developers are seeking to add around 500 MW in wind capacity in the coming years. (1$ = 1.727 Bosnian marka)
