In Detail : Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Pvt Ltd have entered into a 50:50 joint venture to drive India’s green energy ambitions. This collaboration is focused on developing and operating projects in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and its derivatives, with the aim of supporting India’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
The partnership will explore multiple avenues, including green ammonia production, reduction of port emissions, and bunkering infrastructure for green fuels. By combining BPCL’s strong presence in the Indian energy sector with Sembcorp’s expertise in renewable energy, the joint venture is expected to deliver efficient and scalable clean energy solutions.
BPCL’s Chairman and Managing Director, G. Krishnakumar, highlighted that the joint venture marks a significant step in the company’s journey toward sustainability. It aligns with BPCL’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, reinforcing its commitment to a greener future.
Sembcorp, which already operates 6 GW of renewable energy assets in India, brings considerable experience to the table. Vipul Tuli, President and CEO of Sembcorp Renewables, stated that the company is committed to accelerating the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors through innovative and large-scale clean energy solutions.
This collaboration comes at a crucial time when India is pushing forward with its clean energy targets. The country aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
