Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power and GIZ ink an agreement to support policies and programme envisaged in the Energy Conservation Act, 2001
Recognising the strategic importance of energy efficiency, fostering sustainable innovative business models in the energy efficiency sector, and building on a long-term partnership under the Indo-German Energy Programme, an agreement was signed between the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH India on behalf of Government of India and Government of Germany respectively for technical cooperation under the title “Indo-German Energy Programme – Demand Side Energy Efficiency in India (IGEN-EE)”.
The agreement was signed on 8 August, 2017 at the office of Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), New Delhi by Mr Abhay Bakre, Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power and Dr Wolfgang Hannig, Country Director, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH India and Dr Winfried Damm, Programme Director, Indo-German Energy Programme in the presence of Mr Wolfgang Köster, Deputy Head of the Department for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) at the German Embassy in India.
The IGEN-EE project is supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency Ministry of Power, Government of India and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
The project aims to support large scale energy efficiency policies and programmes under the Energy Conservation Act. The project also marks the launch of the second cycle of the Perform Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme, a flagship initiative of the National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE) under the PM’s National Action Plan on Climate Change.
The German contribution to the project is up to EUR 3,000,000.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr Abhay Bakre, Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power said that BEE and GIZ have witnessed successful cooperation since many years and most of the BEE initiatives in the energy sector have been well supported by GIZ, from implementation support, sharing of best practices and technology transfer. Dr Wolfgang Hannig, Country Director GIZ India, added that this is an auspicious moment and GIZ is glad to support such a project that is expected to bring a transformational change in energy efficiency and has strong climate change mitigation benefits. Dr Hannig also appreciated the efforts in achieving the targets under the first cycle of the PAT Scheme said that this a success story and GIZ looks forward to delivering tailor-made solutions.
Mr Köster from German Embassy acknowledged the contribution of the programme in the energy sector. He also said that the signing of this agreement reinforces the longstanding partnership between India and Germany and signals strengthened bilateral cooperation between the two countries in future.
Indo-German Technical Cooperation in the field of energy commenced in 1995, when the first phase of the Indo-German Energy Efficiency Project was started by the Energy Management Centre, an organisation which was succeeded later by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
