Car battery of the future faces acid test

In the basement beneath Peter Bruce’s feet, massed ranks of batteries discharge and recharge, discharge and recharge. At different temperatures, at different speeds, their cathodes expand, their anodes empty out — and then they go through the whole cycle again.
One day the technology in this Oxford laboratory could achieve one of the greatest goals of modern engineering: creating a battery that can make an electric car as good as a petrol one.
Not, though, today.
“Our challenge is, how do we give it a longer driving range? It’s not good enough now,” Professor Bruce, 62, says. “How can we make it refuel faster? Half an hour to fast-charge a car still isn’t good enough.”
