Centre to plan cut production from 81 thermal power plants – EQ Mag Pro
The thermal power plants in future shall operate up to the technical minimum to accommodate cheaper renewable energy when it is available.
New Delhi: The Union Power Ministry of India has picked 81 thermal power units to move ahead to achieve the target of renewable energy capacity by 2026, mentioned in a letter from the Ministry of Power to central and state power departments.
This process of reduction in production will take the next four years. “The thermal power plants in future shall operate up to the technical minimum to accommodate cheaper renewable energy when it is available,” the letter said.
The government is aiming toward green energy and saving cost, this will only reduce the production and power generation, and will not involve shutting down old and expensive power plants. Currently, India has 173 coal-fired plants. The state-owned NTPC and privately owned units of Tata Power, Adani Power, etc include units.
India is facing 37% short of its end-2022 green energy target. The world’s 3rd largest renewable energy producer committed to a goal of 450 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030.
