The Chandigarh Renewable Energy, Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST) has decided to extend the date for applying for a free rooftop solar power unit till April 15. Initially, the last date was March 31. However, only 600 people applied for the units – much below the expectation of the authorities.
Debendra Dalai, CEO of Crest, said: “We have decided to extend the date till April 15. In fact, we got around 600 applications and we are looking forward to more and more people applying for it.”
“The minimum requirement for having a solar panel free from the department is that the roof space must be at least 500 square feet. We will be installing solar panels of 5 watt to 10 watt,” he added.

A few days ago, CRAWFED, CREST, the Chandigarh administration, and NGO Yuvsatta organised the ‘RESCO-Solar Power awareness’ program and a free medical camp for representatives of resident welfare associations (RWA) from over 50 sectors in the city at the Government Museum & Art Gallery, Sector 10, Chandigarh.
At the program, S Sukhwinder Singh, project director of CREST, told RWA representatives about the ‘RESCO Model of Solar Power’ for consumers available on a BOT (Build Operate Transfer) basis. A detailed presentation was made to the participants – comprising representatives from various RWAs – where monetary as well as environmental benefits were explained in detail.
Dalai, the chief guest of the event, said this model was approved after three years of continuous follow-up and hearings with the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC). He also set a target for Chandigarh to become carbon neutral by 2030.
