China leads world in public EV charging connectors – EQ Mag Pro
Yahoo Finance’s Brian Cheung discusses the chart of the day, showing the global breakdown of EV charging connectors by country, as Tesla is reportedly expanding its network to non-Tesla drivers.
BRIAN CHEUNG: Well, time now for our Chart of the Day. And we want to talk about electric vehicles because this chart here shows you the work that the United States has to do to get its EV charger network beefed up. In fact, we’re lagging behind China, which you can see in the purple bars. The United States is in the orange here. This tells you the amount of public connectors, according to Bloomberg.
And again, naturally, you would expect China to have more just because the population is larger, but shows that we’ve really only a small portion of the pie internationally, all of this as “The Wall Street Journal” reporting that you could start seeing Tesla chargers for non-Teslas as the company looks to bid for federal and state contracts thanks to appropriations from the Biden administration. So, again, Tesla being one of the larger EV makers, at least here in the United States, maybe that would really boost the infrastructure here.
AKIKO FUJITA: I think this is just an interesting story because when you think about Elon Musk, he has been very critical of government subsidies going towards EV makers.
BRIAN CHEUNG: [? And yet here he goes. ?]
AKIKO FUJITA: And here he is, bidding for those subsidies, right? I mean, so, in some ways, you can call Musk’s bluff. But at the same time, it points to the need for that public funding to come in to really scale out in a big way.
BRIAN CHEUNG: Are you also worried about how these port chargers– like, what if they just start switching it up, like they do on the iPhones? You know, like, it’s like Lightning, and then it’s like USB-C.
AKIKO FUJITA: Can you imagine?
BRIAN CHEUNG: What if, at some point, they’re just like, oh, actually, the port’s different. The shape is different now.
AKIKO FUJITA: I hope that they’ve figured that out by now.
BRIAN CHEUNG: Yeah, I’ll talk to somebody about–
