Clean utilisation of coal is the future says Secretary Coal – EQ Mag

NEW DELHI : The MGMI (Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute of India) recently organized a National Seminar on the theme ‘Meeting the Challenges – Blue Hydrogen’ in virtual mode. During the seminar, top officials from the Indian government and the mining industry discussed the nation’s energy security and the role of coal and clean coal utilization in meeting the country’s energy needs.

Delivering the 62nd Holland Memoral lecture in virtual mode at the National Seminar on the theme ‘ Meeting the Challenges- Blue Hydrogen’ Shri Amrit Lal Meena, Secretary (Coal), stressed that the nation’s energy security is a priority, and coal will continue to play a significant role in meeting the country’s energy needs in the coming years. He emphasized the importance of clean coal utilization for sustainable development.

In his special address, Shri Pramod Agarwal, Chairman CIL (Coal India Limited), underlined the need for sustainable fossil fuel consumption in the future, where blue hydrogen will be crucial. He explained that while blue hydrogen could replace grey hydrogen until green hydrogen becomes cheaper, green hydrogen will be the dominant option in the future. He also reaffirmed Coal India’s commitment to supporting research and development efforts in the field of blue hydrogen.

Dr. B. Veera Reddy, Director (Technical) CIL, highlighted the significance of hosting lectures, workshops, and intellectual discussions for the overall growth of the mining industry.

The seminar provided an excellent platform for experts from the government, mining, and energy sectors to discuss various challenges and opportunities associated with blue hydrogen.

The discussions emphasized the importance of sustainable energy consumption and the need to explore alternative sources of energy to meet the nation’s growing energy demands.
