CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Renewal Energy, Science and Technology Promotion Society (Crest) has submitted plans to UT administration for installing solar
plants in the city to achieve target of 69 megawatt (MW) set by the ministry of new and renewable energy by the year 2022.
As per Crest’s plan, they will install solar plants on the rooftop of all community centres in the city, rooftop of government buildings, water works office in Sector 39,
New Lake in Sector 42, seasonal rivulet passing through city, and open spaces in the city.

The UT administration had already approved the detailed project report (DPR) of installation of 800kW solar power plants worth Rs 4.5 crore at the parking area of the New Lake at Sector 42. Out of 800kW, 90kW solar energy would be reserved for charging e-vehicles.

The DPR was approved by the principal secretary of science and technology and renewable energy department Arun Kumar, who is also the principal home secretary, Chandigarh. It will be the first of its kind charging station for electricity-run vehicles in Chandigarh.

Crest also planned to install a 3MW solar plant on the N-choe, a seasonal rivulet that passes through Garden of Springs, Sector 53, at the southern end of Chandigarh. It would be first of its kind solar plant on the N-choe.

The UT administration had recently notified extension for installation of solar plants in Chandigarh by June 30. The notification issued by UT chief administrator Ajoy Kumar Sinha read, “This shall be treated as last extension and no further extension shall be granted beyond June 30, 2019.” The Crest had recently proposed to extend deadline to install solar plants by six months. Though the deadline for installing rooftop solar power plants at residential properties in Chandigarh expired on November 17 last year, the Crest had decided to continue accepting the applications.
