With a lot of advantages — sustainable, minimal distribution losses, dedicated transmission and reduce electricity consumption — rooftop solar systems have become choice of many Indoreans.

Indore : With a lot of advantages — sustainable, minimal distribution losses, dedicated transmission and reduce electricity consumption — rooftop solar systems have become choice of many Indoreans. Consequently, number of rooftop solar system connections in Indore has increased to 1850 with 350 new solar plants being installed in the last four months.

Average units of electricity produced through 1850 rooftop solar plants in a month is worth Rs2 crore. Government regulations are clear and process for installation of solar plants in residential areas has been simplifie over these years, said discom officials.

“Indore has a maximum number of rooftop solar power plants in Malwa-Nimar region. Response from citizens is also good as many people are getting installed solar plants on their property,” discom managing director Amit Tomar said.

“We have received around 100 new applications for installation of a net-metering rooftop solar system. The applications are being processed on priority to encourage more citizens,” he said.

The rooftop solar plants work on net-metering system, wherein electricity produced through the plant directly goes to nearby grid station. Produced electricity units are calculated and adjusted with monthly consumption of electricity supplied by discom to respective consumer.

“Consumers have to pay just for energy consumed minus the energy transferred by them to the power grid. Adjustments are made on a monthly or annual basis,” said officials, adding that plants were installed with help of private contractors authorised by the government.
