With a roadmap to harness 75% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2050, Dubai is reaching out to investors, consultants, equipment suppliers and developers in India, which has emerged as one of the top leading solar markets in the world.
In a three-city road show in India that included Jaipur besides Delhi and Mumbai, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), the public service infrastructure arm of the government there showcased the opportunities in solar energy sector where the Indian businessmen can participate and expand their operations without much hurdle.
“The Dubai Clean Energy Strategy-2050 aims to generate 7% of Dubai’s energy from clean sources by 2020, 25% by 2030 and 75% by 2050. To reach the milestone we have identified five main pillars that include infrastructure, legislation, funding, building capacities and skills, and an environment-friendly energy mix,” said Abdul Sayed Abdul Hameed, senior manager – procurement and contracts, business support.
Addressing a gathering of solar energy ecosystem players here, organised by DEWA and Rajasthan Solar Association (RSA), Hameed said that Dubai has managed to reduce its power transmission and distribution (T&D) losses to the lowest level in the world.
“DEWA has surpassed leading European and American companies by reducing the losses to 3.3% compared to 6-7% in Europe and the US,” added Hameed.
Being the leading solar power producer in the country, Rajasthan is home to a lot of ecosystem players and DEWA expects to tap the resource base here to help it reach the clean energy goals.
“Besides the strong trade, and government relationship, India and Dubai have proximity to their advantage. Over the past few years, the solar sector in India is buzzing with many activities across sectors government, private and public resulting in required competitiveness; be it in engineering, manufacturing or project implementation. Execution excellence is at par with international standards. We believe DEWA can gain out of the resources available here. This will also give the companies here in India an opportunity to grow their businesses through Dubai in MENA region,” said L K Verma, Secretary General of Indian Business and Professional Council, RAK chapter.
Top office bearers of the RSA, including president Suman Kumar and general secretary Sunil Bansal said that solar sector provides multiple opportunities for the domestic industry as doing business in Dubai is hassle-free and the government there is very pro-active.
