This renewable energy solution is the first of its kind in Bangladesh

edotco Bangladesh, an integrated telecommunications infrastructure services company, has built the country’s first ever 75-meter long hybrid solar wind tower in Hatiya, a remote island in the northern Bay of Bengal where commercial power connection is rare.

Connectivity was also exceptionally difficult in that area as it is prone to frequent cyclones and colossal ocean tides, said a press release.

This renewable energy solution is the first of its kind in Bangladesh, it added.

“As a socially responsible company, edotco implements initiatives in communities across the nation irrespective of their remoteness or economic condition, solutions like these allow us to bring connectivity to under privileged communities who desperately need it for social empowerment,” said Ricky Steyn, Country Managing Director of edotco Bangladesh.

“We understand how connecting rural communities is integral in meeting the country’s digital vision and are committed to being nation building partners,” he added.

edotco Group’s Director of Engineering and Technology Ir Kumari Nalini said that wherever possible, they used national grid as the main energy source in building towers.

However, in challenging cases, renewable energy was a viable solution, she added, mentioning that such a solution was also applied in four sites across Myanmar last year.

Hybrid solar wind tower is a part of edotco’s continuous efforts to ensureseamless connectivity throughout the nation using alternative energy solutions to power telecom towers through the deployment of innovative, sustainable and energy-efficient solutions, the release reads.

This innovative tower consists of an in-built green hybrid energy solution with a capacity of 42 kWh/day output from 12 kWp solar and 6kWh/day from 4 kW wind turbine mounted on the tower to ensure round the clock power supply, keeping the telecom system operating throughout the year, it mentions.

The renewable energy solutionnot only helps decrease operating expenses by reducing diesel consumption and maintenance cost, but also reduces carbon emission in the environment up to 80%, the company said.

Special Features of this Hybrid System are vertical axis wind turbines to take wind from 360 degree, scalable to user defined energy need, easy to assemble and maintain, requires minimal operation and maintenance support and environment friendly and silent operation.

The edotco Bangladesh currently owns and operates over 10,000 telecom towers throughout Bangladesh.

Established in 2012, the parent of the edotco Bangladesh — edotco Group — is the first regional and integrated telecommunications infrastructure services company in Asia, providing end-to-end solutions in the tower services sector from tower leasing, co-locations, build-to-suit, energy, transmission and operations and maintenance.
