The Boston Business Journal has ranked Enel second on their list of the biggest clean energy companies in Massachusetts. A achievement that reflects the growth of Enel Green Power North America, active in the state since 2000 and with a managed capacity of over 3.3 GW of renewable energy throughout the USA.
From renewable energy to demand response solutions, Enel Group continues to grow in the state of Massachusetts. In Boston Business Journal’s annual list of the Largest Clean Energy Companies in Massachusetts, ranked by number of employees, Enel took the second spot this year, jumping two spots from the 2016 list. Enel’s rise in the rankings can be attributed to its 167 percent growth, the most of all companies on the list.
The company’s headcount increased from just over 200 to more than 560 employees in the state (1,067 in all U.S. offices) thanks in part to the growth in the renewables business and the August acquisition of EnerNOC, the Boston-based and global leader of demand response and energy services for utility, commercial, institutional and industrial customers. With the addition of EnerNOC’s employees, customers, and sites, Enel’s new e-Solutions business line has taken off, opening Enel up to innovative business opportunities with a growing customer base.
Enel’s renewable division, Enel Green Power North America (EGP-NA), has long called Massachusetts home. In 2000, Enel, through EGP-NA, entered the Massachusetts market when it acquired two historic hydro power plants in the state – the 20.7 MW Boott Hydro plant in Lowell and the 14.3 MW Lawrence Hydro plant in Lawrence. These two hydro power plants, both of which have played an important role in the Commonwealth’s industrial history along the Merrimack River, produce enough energy to power more than 14,000 U.S. households every year, and help avoid the emission of nearly 122,000 tons of CO2 annually.
Through the years, EGP-NA has developed one of the largest and fastest growing renewable energy portfolios in the United States. In early 2017, EGP-NA outgrew its former Andover headquarters, and moved across town to a new, collaborative and sustainable 60,000+ square foot headquarters, which was completely renovated, designed, and built with the help of local Massachusetts-based contractors.
From its Andover office, EGP-NA’s state-of-the-art Control and Monitoring Room controls around 100 plants across the country, with a managed capacity exceeding 3.3 GW powered by renewable hydropower, wind, geothermal, and solar energy. In 2016, EGP-NA plants produced enough energy to power the equivalent of every household in the city of Boston for about three years.
In March, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker inaugurated EGP-NA’s new office, recognizing EGP-NA as both a leader in innovation and an ally to his administration, helping to grow the Commonwealth’s clean energy industry.

Part of Enel’s philosophy is to be active and contributing members in our local communities where we live and work. In October, during the company’s annual Green Up Our Community Week, more than 180 employees from EnerNOC and EGP-NA volunteered to take part in various community activities as we partnered with local Massachusetts organizations including the Merrimack River Watershed Council, the Boston Area Gleaners, Retelle Reservation, and Mass Audubon Ipswich River Sanctuary.
