Russian state firm Rosatom on 30 June said the Egypt Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA) had issued it a permit to build the first of four 1.2GW units of the planned 4.8GW El Dabaa nuclear plant 170km west of Alexandria on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast.
Though site preparation work has already taken place and Rosatom says it has begun manufacturing components in Russia, receipt of the safety permit is a “prerequisite for the start of the main stage of construction,” Rosatom says.
