Electric cars are the future of mobility, and over the past four years, we have seen a rise in the number of electric vehicles introduced to the market. Indian car manufacturers like Tata, Mahindra, and luxury car manufacturers have launched electric vehicles in India. According to a recent report, the Delhi government has announced that there has been a rise in the number of electric vehicle sales in the state. Since the beginning of this year, 18,770 units of electric vehicles have been sold in the national capital. The report suggests that one out of ten cars sold in the city this year was an electric vehicle.

In January and February, electric vehicles contributed an average of 10 percent to the overall vehicle sales in the city. In February, out of 48,728 overall vehicles registered in the city, 5,268 were EVs. Similarly, in January this year, 5,576 EVs were registered. In the month of March, 7,926 units of electric vehicles were registered in the state, including commercial vehicles. Out of these, 20 percent of the sales came from passenger electric cars. The Delhi government took to social media and posted on Twitter, “Delhi EV sales Mar’23 report.. 7,917 Electric vehicles sold. EV contributed 14.8% of overall vehicles sold in the month; Highest among any states in India. 4W sales contributed to 20% of EV sold. 3W (Goods) contributed 12%. 1.12 lacs EV sold under Delhi EV policy #SwitchDelhi.”

As mentioned in the post, this is the highest among any states in the country. The reason why more people in Delhi are adopting electric vehicles is because of the policy. The Aam Aadmi Party government in the state launched a comprehensive policy for electric vehicle buyers in 2020. Ever since the policy was implemented, the total number of electric vehicles in the state has grown to 1.12 lakh units.

The Delhi government is pushing hard to promote the use of electric vehicles and make them even more popular. The electric vehicle policy formulated by the Delhi government offers incentives to electric vehicle buyers, which has encouraged many buyers to adopt electric vehicles. In addition to asking the public to adopt electric vehicles, the Delhi government has also added electric buses to the public transport fleet.

Electric vehicles will be the future of mobility in India and around the world. The government (both central and state) is currently working hard to promote the use of electric cars to bring down pollution in many major cities. Just like the Delhi government’s EV policy, many states have incentive-based EV policies to accelerate the rate of adoption. They have also developed charging infrastructure for electric vehicles on major highways. Tata Motors is currently one of the leading electric car manufacturers in the passenger vehicle segment, with models like the Tata Nexon EV, Nexon EV Max, Tigor EV, and the recently launched Tiago EV.

The Nexon EV is the best-selling electric SUV in the country, and as of now, Tata is also working on a couple of new electric models for the market, including the Tata Harrier, the concept of which was showcased at the Auto Expo this year. Tata also showcased the Avinya concept and the Curvv EV concept to the public. In the coming years, the number of electric vehicle sales in the country is likely to go up.
