In a tragic incident, a 7-year-old boy in Maharashtra was killed after the battery of an electric scooter exploded while it was being charged at his home. The incident took place in Vasai area of Palghar, Maharashtra on Sunday.

The boy was identified as Shabbir Shahnawaz. As per reports, Shabbir and his grandmother were sleeping in a hall at their home, where the electric scooter was plugged in for charging by his father. While Shabbir’s grandmother suffered minor injuries, the boy suffered over 70 per cent burns and was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to police, a case has been registered at Manikpur police station and investigation is underway. The make and model of the electric scooter in question haven’t been revealed. Given the rising instances of EV batteries catching fire or blasting, the Government of India decided to introduce more stringent EV battery safety norms. These new norms were initially set to come into effect from October 1, however, the deadline was deferred to December 1, 2022.

The new EV battery norms will come into effect in two phases, with the phase 1 beginning on December 1, while Phase 2 will be brought into action on 31 March, 2o23. The amendments include additional safety requirements related to battery cells, on-board charger, design of the battery packs, and thermal propagation due to internal cell short circuits.
